Anyone know how to make it? I live in Mexico and it's hard to find asian products (but possible) so i haven't found thai tea leaves, do you actually need the particular tea or is there some kind of substitute? I miss it!

Fri, June 16, 2006 - 11:41 AMI think that you can make pretty decent Thai tea with regular black tea leaves, but the key is in adding the other flavors like anise, etc. that make Thai tea so damn good. unfortunately, i don't know what all of the other ingredients are or what proportion they're used in... I am spoiled here in San Francisco with easy access to thai products.

re: tea leaves nah, not really... Thai tea is rot-gut stuff, made traditionally. Probably the cheapest Indian or Chinese tea they can get. I mean the reddish color isn't from spices or coloring, it's from boiling black tea hour upon hour. It's REALLY bitter stuff made the "street food" way. Which is why it's loaded up with enough sugar and cocomilk or condensed milk (or skip all that and just use sweetened condensed milk, being in Mexico I'm sure you can get leche condensada azurcarada in every bodega - I like Nestle's La Lechera for Thai tea.).
If you can't find a Thai tea mix you like (OK or any at all) this one works very well... and I've tried a dozen or so. I usually also just buy Thai tea mix too, being that I have access to so many Asian markets too...
Woah... the website is still up!! I was going to post the recipe directly, but the fact that it's been around like 8 years and it's still online, I'll just send you there. It is quite good, beside there's tons of information even pictures of the bags of Thai teas you're likely to spot in Asian markets. Great resource. (the powdered vanilla is not a suggestion - boiling vanilla extract will dissipate all it's flavor.)

I did just brew a batch, and am currently waiting for it to cool so I can begin my guzzling experience! I`m even making a Thai (sorta...hopefully) dinner for my sweetie tonight. We will have the tea, although I may spike his with some Amarula, spicy orange chicken for him, tofu for me, and fluffy rice wtih fresh cilantro from the garden! Followed by mango and melon sorbet that I plan on making....wish me luck! So, I`m really new to this cooking outside of Canadian fare, and am loving it!! -

HEY! Since you've never heard of Thai tea then you've probably never had olieng (Thai iced coffee). If you trust me by this point, I will say this: Nothing on the planet tastes like it. But if you like it, you'll love it. It's unique, to be sure. (and if you hate it, you'll really hate it, but let's not assume the negative.)
It's got some weird stuff in it for a coffee; corn, soybeans, sesame seed... and it's delicious! I swear! You can buy it premixed in bottles or in powder form, or make it from scratch like the tea. I'd suggest getting a couple bottles from different brands mail-order, so you have an idea how it's supposed to taste, and then you can decide if you want to make it or buy powdered mix. I like keeping a case of Cofe brand olieng around, just because I'm impulsive and yet lazy. If I decide I want it, I want it NOW! (aka American), But, then I don't have to pay shipping on a cases of filled glass bottles, I just stop at one of the Thai markets and pick 'em up. YMMV since you live in a less-than-asian area.

Scroll to the bottom and Google any of those spellings. The stuff is magical. I crave it at really inappropriate times, like 4am. Smelling rice pudding of any kind cooking is not very nice, probably makes people 3 apartments away have nice dreams, though.

Wed, June 28, 2006 - 3:48 PMThat thai "sticky rice" is commonly referred to in English as "glutinous" or "sweet" rice... and it comes in white or black. You can use either for that recipe.
Serve that up warm with some ripe mangoes and you just might die on the spot. -

Wed, June 28, 2006 - 9:38 PMSo, I made it, it was gooooooooood, but only good with coconut milk. I adulterated it by mixing a vanilla soy milk with a bottled French vanilla coffee mate, and heaven! Yes, my sweetie took his the traditional way, but spiked with Amarula....I sipped it, again, heaven!
Amarula by the way, is kinda like Baileys but it`s made from the South African fruit Marula. When the trees are full of overripe fruit, vegetarian and omnivorous animals alike eat them `till they get drunk and fall down! It`s true! I watched it! Drunken elephants are funny! There is a picture of an elephant on the bottle next to the tree, so it`s an easy liquour to find. I had the fruit in SA, and it is wonderfull! Sweet and juicy, huge stone for a small fruit though. But I digress.
I will try the coffee, although I`m not a huge coffee fan. Love to taste stuff though....thanks again you guys, you rock!!!

I have tried to find sticky rice in the States, with no success. I had it quite a lot when I first had Thai food, in Germany of all places, but it never seems to exist in the States.

If you HAVE to buy on line, go ahead and buy big... 20lb at least... shipping food sucks. Anyway, templeofthai.com is right around the corner, I stop in a couple times a month... if they stiff you I'll shame them (they won't, they're nice people like almost every Thai...)

Tue, August 15, 2006 - 3:54 PMThere is a company that has a concentrated form. A friend gave me some and now I am hooked. You don't have to brew it because it is like a syrup. I buy it at the cooks warehouse but I think they sell it online at www.currysimple.com. Have you tried this?
